80+ yr old Mom discovers: Sweet Potato Pie
I grew up in New England and ate meat and potatoes. Well my mother did add a few Italian dishes occassionally, and we did have gardens, and we did go fishing, and we loved ice cream and seafood. Our diet was NOT the SAD American diet you hear of today. I still remember my mother’s excalmations over the first asparagus, and my eating too much fresh rhubarb that grew in the yard.
Once when I complimented my Mother for providing a good nutritous diet, she replied, “I didn’t do it quite on purpose, fruit cost less than cookies.” She made the right choices often.
Years go by, and just last night, my mother started talking about sweet potato pie. It was a new discovery for her, and my sister kowing how much she liked it, made sure to get a recipe so they had sweet potato pie at Thanksgiving. I realized then how often we bury ourselves in food traps that are masked by ritual. We create habits that are comfortable and do not stray from them.
I left New England long ago, and then returned, and left again. I’ve always held a curious attitude about food, and love exploring world cultures via my plate. Luckily I live in Santa Fe where we have many cuisines available all year long. Plus we have ample bookstores that have lots of cookbooks.
I had a hard time finding just the right video, and the first is the one I found last. Now you have choices and a lot of information. Eat hardy, this good pie plus a salad could be a whole meal in itself.
Trick question, did you laugh at all while listening here? Oops, need to review. Laughter is great medicine. Als Variety is the best spice in life.

LOL!
I am sorry, I have to chuckle at the young lady from England and her recipe!
I come from a long line of excellent Southern Louisiana cooks and I have never, ever seen a sweet potato pie filling that dry and chunky!
Can’t believe she used that much sugar either!
A sweet potato pie should be smooth, with a light buttery taste, with a hint of spices.
Anyway, she tried!
